Gemma is driving her career forward
“The Work Programme has been brilliant, it has pushed me in the direction that I needed to go.”
Gemma, from Bournemouth, was referred to the Work Programme by JobCentre Plus after being out of work for a year. She had previously worked with children in nurseries and pre-schools but did not enjoy it, she has also worked in retail for Primark and Spar.
Gemma, who lives with her parents, gained low grades in her GCSEs, with the exception of art, where she gained a C grade.
What Prospects did
Gemma was assigned Jules as her Prospects personal adviser. Jules helped Gemma by ensuring she received the right support and was kept on track with moving forward. Jules has listened to what Gemma want to do, giving her clear direction and pushing her when she needed to be pushed. As a result of they built a good relationship and Gemma felt able to discuss any issues openly to obtain the right support.
Together they prepared for work, by looking at Gemma’s CV, cover letter and Jules helped her complete application forms. Throughout the process Jules reminded Gemma to keep an open mind and work hard to make sure she was the best she could be, telling her to remember “I can do anything if I try hard.”
Outcomes and results
Gemma is now in employment she really enjoys working as a bus driver. She has gained confidence and is confident speaking to people. She says: “I am now able to talk to all kinds of people and I am not looking back.”
Gemma says her ultimate aim is: “to increase the hours I am given and try to do better and learn more in my role and gain more responsibility. I want to progress in my current role.”
