Dragons Den at grammar school
Prospects Leicestershire inherited a small contract to do some work with Leicester Grammar School. They have a lovely purpose built new school in a great location, so it presented us with an opportunity to work in somewhere quite different from our usual venues. The work involved some drop-in clinics with students but also some work related learning events.
The first of these was a Business Dragons event, based loosely on the popular TV series Dragons’ Den. We invited in some successful local entrepreneurs to work with the students for a day on developing a product and preparing it to go to market. This was an unusual test for the students and helped them to develop some skills that they might not have used a great deal before. The theme for the day was to come up with a product that might be used on a family holiday. The students were invited to be creative as well as realistic.
They were pitted against each other in competition to give the day an edge. Here were some great ideas and presentations. We chose winners in the categories of Best Innovation, Best Presentation and Overall Winner. The winning product was called the Wind up Pro, and highlighted the value to the students of always having a means to charge their phones and other electronic gadgets. Feedback from the dragons themselves was overwhelmingly positive. The students were clearly enthused by the day as well.
