Anna, change of career from admin to midwifery

26 June 2013

National Careers ServiceAnna* contacted the National Careers Service for support in changing her career. She was working in administration but knew it was not the career she wanted.

Anna met with an adviser, who suggested completing a Skills Health Check to see where her interests lay and how she could use any previous experience. It became evident that Nursing was Anna’s favourite option; she had always been interested in this area but never pursued it.

Anna was particularly focused on midwifery. The adviser therefore found information about local universities and the entry requirements for relevant courses, as well as volunteering opportunities. She then completed an action plan with Anna to set some realistic goals for the future and plan her move into midwifery.

The adviser encouraged Anna to apply for courses and she was accepted at a London university. She will also be applying for her first role as a midwife soon.

Anna said:
“[The National Careers Service] has made all the difference in my life now and for the future ahead of me. I am doing what I really wanted to do. It’s my dream job. Whenever I speak about my situation, I always try and encourage someone else to contact the service.”
