Ray is Chairman of the Prospects Group. Ray managed Prospects from its foundation in 1995 to October 2014. During this time Ray grew the Group from a company holding a single contract in South London to a national organisation with a turnover of more than £80 million and more than 1,400 staff. Under his leadership, the Prospects Group became a major provider of education, employment and training services with clients including the Department for Education, the Department for Work and Pensions, Skills Funding Agency, Ofsted, local authorities, schools and colleges.
For 11 years before joining Prospects, Ray was head of the careers service at the London Borough of Havering, the only local authority careers service to win the Charter Mark Award. He understands the local authority perspective well, having been a Basildon District Councillor, Essex County Councillor and a member of the Essex Police Authority. He has also twice stood as a parliamentary candidate. He started his career as a teacher, before moving into educational administration and then the private sector.
Ray has served on a number of national careers service advisory bodies and is also on the boards of several companies. He served as a Commissioner on the Government’s Youth Citizenship Commission between 2008 - 2009 and was a member of a Liberal Democrat working group on mutual companies. He is a graduate of Reading University and studied further at the University of East London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and Freeman of the City of London.
