In the last year, the unemployment rate in Taunton has significantly dropped. Recent figures show the unemployment rate for Taunton stands at 2.7%, lower than the previous year of 4.8%, Taunton Deane has the lowest unemployment rate in the whole of Somerset. However, there are still a number of people who find it difficult to find employment. Prospects, the employment, education and skills company, provides the governments Work Programme in Taunton and supports individuals in finding work by helping them develop interview techniques, updating CVs, helping to build confidence as well as helping to find employers.
Since January the Work Programme in Taunton have helped 64 people back into work, including 61 year old Adrian Butler who had been unemployed for a year and four months. Adrian had previously worked as a Building Labourer and a factory worker, due to having COPD he has found it difficult to find work. Adrian felt that because of his age finding a job would be a real challenge and he started to give up hope.
Adrian got in touch with the Work Programme and worked closely with his adviser, Loretta, to build his confidence and look at job opportunities. After a month of attending the Work Programme, Adrian managed to secure a job as a Production operator at Somerton Packaging Company. The Work Programme had a positive impact on Adrian’s life, he met new people, has gained more knowledge on the job opportunities available. He has also cut down on smoking resulting on his COPD getting better. Adrian now sticks by three things “Don’t give up hope, don’t feel despondent and keep trying.”
Adrian said: “If I had been in a position where someone who was 60 had told me they got a job, I would have been given hope that it can happen for me. I hope my story inspires others and gives them hope that they too can achieve what they want.”
