In Leicestershire we provide careers information, advice and guidance for young people on behalf of Leicestershire County Council
Our main focus is work with young people Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) aged 16–19. We provide careers information advice and guidance to support young people into education, work or training.
We offer a service at community venues across the country taking our service to where young people want to be seen.
To support young people and to inform the way we provide our services, we regularly contact all young people aged 16 to 19 at different frequencies, depending upon their circumstances.
We work in schools with students in Years 11 and 12 who may potentially become NEET, putting support in place to help them to find education, work or training.
We also offer a charged service to schools for other support such as guidance interviews, parents’ evenings and group work sessions.
To meet the September Guarantee, we provide an education and training offer for all 16 year olds; and run an electronic application system for young people leaving school.
We produce progression data of young people at age 16, for the local authority and the Department for Education.
Changes in the law in relation to the raising of the participation age mean young people are staying longer in education or training, or taking a job with training, so we are working with the local authority to promote information about these changes.
Improve your Prospects
Improve Your Prospects is a re-engagement course for young people aged 16-24 who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) and live in Leicestershire or Leicester city. Improve Your Prospects encourages young people to springboard on to Apprenticeships, employment, education, Traineeships or unpaid work.
Improve Your Prospects is funded through the European Social Fund and Education & Skills Funding Agency. It focuses on Leicester & Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership’s (LLLEP) priorities of supporting more young people in to Apprenticeships and reducing the numbers of NEET young people by 50%.
Young people can take two routes on Improve Your Prospects. The first route supports the young person with employability skills for six weeks. The second route offers the six weeks employability and qualifications in basic skills or vocational areas up to a level 2 standard, taking up to 12 weeks. Young people taking the second route can gain qualifications in a number of areas including art and design, childcare, construction, decorating, functional skills, health and safety, hospitality and customer service, motor vehicles and mechanics, music, personal development, social media and administration, and sports.
Improve Your Prospects is delivered by Prospects across Leicestershire and by Leicester Connexions within the city.
