Ricky met National Careers Service adviser at JobCentre Plus

Before Prospects

When the building developers Ricky* worked for went into liquidation, he was made redundant. Having worked for the same firm for 24 years Ricky was unsure how to find work or market himself.

What Prospects did

Ricky visited JobCentre Plus and was referred to a National Careers Service personal adviser, Sarah. Sarah, who is based in the JobCentre to make it easier for people to access support, spent time with Ricky. Together they reviewed Ricky’s CV and created a new one. They visited online jobsites and Sarah shared her tips on making the most of them. 

As a trained careers adviser, Prospects employee, Sarah, helped Ricky to consider a number of live vacancies and the skills needed. This professional advice enabled Ricky to focus on his goals. This led to Ricky making a speculative enquiry to a local employer. 


Ricky is now working for DHL/The Range as a warehouse operative and really enjoying his new working environment and colleagues. 
He comments: “After 24 years hard work and service to be laid off was a real surprise. It knocks you for six and leaves you completely lost. Being back at work after the shock of being made redundant has improved my confidence no end. I can now focus on promotion and gaining new skills on the job.” 

Ricky has already spoken to three of his ex-colleagues who were also made redundant and promoted the National Careers Service. He says: “For me having access to someone who genuinely cared and made it clear that nothing was too much trouble was so empowering. Sarah did such a really good job, I am so pleased.”

Ricky is now hoping to increase his hours, take on more responsibility and improve his skills.
